Which learning method do you enjoy the most? Class discussions, worksheet work, or hands-on activities.

Prompt:  The learning method I enjoy the most would be hands-on activities. Not specifically like a craft but more interactive and communication heavy. I like when we do group projects or activities where we have to talk and work together to solve problems. These kinds of lessons help me understand the material better because I can ask questions, share ideas, and learn from my classmates. It also makes class more interesting and helps me remember what we did. Summary: Today in class we got a new prompt from 3 different philosophers and came up with claims to match. Reflection:  Today I struggled a bit with coming up with claims. After getting some help, it became a lot easier to figure out, especially when it came to defending a claim. The activity really helped me understand the process better.

Describe something you will never fully understand.

Prompt: Something I think I will never be able to fully understand is the idea of someone having an opinion on a persons actions or body that isn't themselves. I believe that if it doesn't really effect you or how you live your life, or end up having a negative impact, you don't have the right to say to or not too. More specifically in our current society, what a woman can and cant do with her body and her health. A man should have no right to make a choice on what a woman decides to do, and no other woman should tell a woman what she can and cant do with her body to me. Yes, everyone deserves the right to express an opinion, but why take away one persons right to choice just because you feel or think differently? I believe that the whole purpose of American is freedom, it's the "land of the free" at the end of the day, so I truly do not understand why that is lacking in our current days. Summary: Today in class, we went over claims, reasoning, and its format....

Describe a time you felt completely lost.

Prompt: A time I felt completely lost is probably when I first moved to Georgia in 2023. I had moved to South Carolina when I was 4 all the way up till I was 13. That's 9 pivtol years of my life spent in a small city. I started kindergarten, met all my friends, grew up and went through big life changes with people I would no longer get to see everyday anymore. I was completely nervous because unfortunately where I lived wasn't as diverse as (metro)Atlanta is. I spent years getting bullied by those who where like me for not fitting their sterotyped version of who I should be, and having friends who I loved but could never really truly relate to some of the experiences I had. So moving scared me, going into my last year of middle school with nobody to walk beside or confide in. Not knowing if I would be judged the same by my own community as I was by others.   Summary: We read an article on 3 year bachelor degrees and completed a worksheer based off of it. Reflection: I think the...

Write about something that you believed as a child.

Prompt: When I was younger, I truly believed in the boogeyman and was terrified of him. Like most kids, I heard stories about the boogeyman from my mom, who would tell me to stay in bed at night so he wouldn’t get me. But my fear got so much worse after I watched the Disney movie "Don’t Look Under The Bed." The movie made the boogeyman seem so real, with his own world and even a scene where a little boy gets kidnapped. After that, I was so scared that I made sure to keep every part of my body under my blanket for years, afraid that the boogeyman would grab my foot or arm and drag me into his world. Summary : Today in class, we learned more about claims. Reflection: There are three different types of claims; fact, value, and policy. All these claims have their own effective way of supporting and defending an arguement. In class when we did the paper assignment of listing critera, it really helped me gain more of an understanding of what a claim is and how it can be supported ...

Think about an argument or disagreement that you wish you could have handled differently. What happened, what was your goal, and what would you do differently now? Use at least one idea from Chapters 1–3 of Thank You for Arguing in your response.

Prompt: One time, I got into an argument with my mom because I didn’t do my chores. She was really mad, and I just said I forgot because I had a lot of homework. My goal was to get her to understand my side, but just making excuses didn’t help. After reading the first chapters of Thank You for Arguing, I realize I should have tried to find something we agreed on, instead of just defending myself. If I could do it again, I’d listen to her, explain my problem, and then work out a solution together, like doing my chores after my homework. I think that would have made things go better for both of us. Summary: In class, we continued to learn more about the essential skills of rhetoric. Reflection: I learned more information of how to use rhetoric properly. Using these main three things: blame, values, and choice, it allows me to know how to really reach my goal in an argument without straying away.

As you grow older and face new experiences, what issue or topic do you think you'll have to stand up and debate most often, whether with friends, family, or society?

Prompt: As I get older and face new challenges, I think the issue I’ll have to stand up for the most is the importance of using my voice, no matter how old I am or who I’m talking to. Sometimes adults say they know best, but I’ve learned that it’s important to share my feelings and opinions, whether I’m with friends, family, or anyone else. It can be confusing when you’re encouraged to speak up but then get criticized for doing it, especially if you’re younger and its to an elder who's believed to "know more than you". I believe that despite your age, it doesn't matter whether what you feel/think is true or false, right or wrong, but that you feel/think it and that's more than enough reason to speak up. Reflection: In class today, we learned about what an argument really is and consists of. Summary: I learned about the different types of rhetroics when performing an argument. All arguments will consist of factual/logical information, credibility/trust, or feelin...

Think of a time when you tried to persuade someone to agree with you, change their mind, or do something you wanted. What were you trying to persuade them to do or believe? How did you use ethos, pathos, or logos to persuade them? Which appeal was most effective and why?

Prompt:  When I tried to persuade my friend to side with Team Iron Man in Avengers: Civil War, I talked about how heartbreaking it was for Tony to find out Steve hid the truth about Bucky killing his parents. Even though Captain America was right to stop Tony from acting out of revenge, being lied to by a close friend would hurt anyone. I pointed out that Tony always sacrifices himself for the greater good, while Steve sometimes just sticks to what he thinks is “right” without thinking about what actually needs to be done. Using pathos, I showed my friend why I believe Iron Man’s side makes more sense. Summary: Today in class we learned about the skills of rhetoric and how to properly achieve your goals with the audience. Reflection: One example that was used was how to get out of a parking ticket. This could be very effective for the rest of somoens life when knowing how to do it properlly. I learned that if you set a goal, level with, use a unarguable excuse, and/or respec...

3 goals I want to achieve this year.

Prompt: My top 3 goals for this year are both academic and personal to me. My first goal would be me wanting to raise my GPA up at least 0.05 to a 0.1 of a point from my previous year as I have done since starting high school. I hopefully can go from ending sophomore year with a 3.8 to a 3.9 - 4.0 this year. My second goal would be related to my career. I hope to get the role I want in this musical this year, leading me to a Shuler and possible Jimmy oppertunity this year. This is a goal that doesn't NEED to happen but would be something that could really catipult what I want to do in my future while only being in high school. My last and final goal would be to stay on track. Get my work done, don't put things off, get more sleep, etc. I really want to achieve these goals because they'll ultimately make me a better person in my career and future to come!
